Music Response
New Wave: The Buggles
I think that the Buggles fit into the new wave genre not only because they are from the same era, but because of the punk feel, with the use of synthesizers and focus on technology. The Buggles became very famous for their "Video Killed the Radio Star" music video, and new wave is known to be paired with some of the most iconic visuals with the birth of MTV. In their context, the Buggles were the beginning of new wave and it worked for them because they blended past punk attitude with newer technological sounds.
Punk: Arctic Monkeys
I think that the Arctic Monkeys fit into the punk genre because the music feels more driven and not just for fun and party culture. Their music has the same sound as punk bands from decades prior, but it also carries some of the same attitudes and messages. The context of Arctic Monkeys is current and it works for them because they are bringing back punk for the younger people who are rejecting the pop music that is on the radio today.
Neo Psychedelia: the xx
I think that the xx fits into neo psychedelia because unlike some of the other genres that are mostly technology, it isn't extremely upbeat. The xx uses their music to appeal to the indie/dream pop audience thats looking for relaxing and "chill" music. The xx's context is today as well and it works for them in the same way that Arctic Monkeys works; there are a lot of people rejecting the popular music right now, as in all generations. They appeal to those by bringing back a genre that was popular in the past.
Nineties: The Verve
I think that the Verve fits into the nineties genre because they used a prominent amount of sampling, which was very popular at the time. They came with a very grungy sound that is heavily associated with the 90s as well. Their context worked well because they used technology that isn't as noticeable in the work as something like a synthesizer would be, but it enhanced their sound and allowed them to become fairly popular throughout the decade.
Electronic/DJ: Zedd
I think that Zedd fits in the category of DJ category because like David Guetta, he collaborates with many artists on his original songs, as well as produces remixes. He is a song-writer, but his use of technology within his music and in the remixing of others, is what made him stand out and be successful in his career. Zedd's music is electronic dance which is very popular among party culture. Zedd's context was the rising dance-party scene, where he was at the forefront of bringing a new style and genre of music. This worked for him because it has some similarities to past styles it derived from, but in the beginning his music was some of the first of its kind.
