Response to Marina Abramovic

I really appreciate that she discusses the moment that changed her perspective on art and performance, because for me that hasn't entirely happened yet and it is really interesting to see that change happen from her point of view. Gradually as I have been getting more immersed in the world of animation I realize that I my goal has always been to give my art live and now this performance of the characters is doing just that. Similar to Marina, I have always been a traditional 2D artist and I haven't found my moment yet as she has with the airplanes, however I see that my opinion is shifting to see more of the performance side of art.

Her hierarchy is very interesting because she describes her method for arranging the arts in the way that she did and my impression of it is by form. She puts music at the top because it is immaterial, and then performance, and then any other art. I understand where she is coming from in terms of how she organized it this way, but I think that any art can be just as affective. The form in which it is delivered is unique to the art, but I don't believe any should be considered inferior. She does end by saying that is very subjective anyway.

Lastly, I really like the concept of different mediums and what exactly a medium is. I have never really considered the body a medium, but clearly in her work, as well as many others, it is. There are many more ways of expressing and presenting art than I have ever thought and even considering music and sound a medium is a fresh perspective to me. I like this way of thinking because just paint, charcoal, pencil, etc., seems too narrow minded especially in today's age when Instagram and social media are some of the most absorbed forms of art and expression.
